This substantial Byzantine cross necklace was handmade from a mold taken from an old hand-carved wooden religious relic, preserving the wonderfully primitive details, texture, and symbolism of the original piece. The large cross features the distinctive arrows and skull with crossbones, along with handset sparkling cubic zirconia stones that bring a beautiful contrast of light to the aged, timeworn design.
I individually create each cross in bronze clay, carefully pressing the clay into my mold before kiln firing it at 1,420°F using a double-carbon firing process in my studio in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.
After firing, each piece is finished entirely by hand using my signature Baroque light gold finish. I preserve the recessed, aged character of the original carving while selectively polishing the raised areas to reveal the details and give the cross the warm glow of an old devotional treasure.
The sparkling CZ stones are intentionally unexpected against the rugged Byzantine-inspired surface. They catch the light beautifully while allowing the ancient character of the cross to remain the focal point.
Because this design originated from an old hand-carved wooden relic, its irregularities, worn lines, and imperfections are part of its history and beauty. I do not attempt to make these details perfectly uniform. Each finished cross will have subtle variations created by the handmade process.
This is a large, substantial statement cross designed for someone who loves antique religious artifacts, Byzantine and medieval-inspired jewelry, historic Christian symbolism, and devotional pieces that feel as though they could have been discovered in an old European collection.
